Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has finalized plans to award scholarships to 1,000 students pursuing degree programs in ICT-related fields through the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation (BIJF).
The beneficiaries will be the first cohort of students at seven new study centers of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, which will be established in Kano Central and Kano South Senatorial Districts—an initiative spearheaded by Senator Barau.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, confirmed that discussions between Senator Barau and the university’s management were concluded over the weekend.
Representing the university at the meeting were Prof. Abubakar Sadik Suleiman, Dean of the Faculty of Management Science and a board member of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, along with Dr. Jamilu Ajiya, Acting Provost of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies.
This initiative builds on Senator Barau’s previous efforts in expanding access to higher education. Last year, he facilitated the establishment of four university study centers in Gwarzo, Danbatta, Dawakin Tofa, and Gabasawa local government areas of Kano North Senatorial District, enabling over 1,000 youths to enroll in various degree programs.

Now, through his foundation, Senator Barau is extending this effort to Kano Central and South by setting up seven additional study centers in Madobi, Kiru, Tudun Wada, Rano, Gaya, Dawakin Kudu, and Minjibir LGAs. Like those in Kano North, these centers will offer degree and diploma programs from the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma.
To kickstart the initiative, Senator Barau is providing scholarships for 1,000 students from Kano Central and South to study ICT-related courses.
“Education is the bedrock of national development. I remain committed to ensuring access to quality education for our people across all 44 local government areas of Kano State,” said Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.
