President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the substantive Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). His appointment, which takes effect from January 23, 2025, is for an initial four-year term.
Aliyu has been serving as the Acting Managing Director of the REA since March 2024. With over 20 years of experience in energy and organizational development across both the public and private sectors, he has held key leadership positions in Nigeria’s on-grid and off-grid power sectors, as well as in the water resources and transportation industries.
Before this appointment, Aliyu served as Head of the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project. He also held roles as General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research, and Deputy General Manager at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET).

President Tinubu expects Aliyu to bring his extensive expertise to bear in advancing the REA’s mission of providing reliable electricity to rural communities. His leadership is anticipated to drive progress in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for sustainable energy and power development.
