A strong political momentum is gathering in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas intensify calls on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, to join the governorship race.
The appeal formed the highlight of a major political gathering in the area, where community leaders and party faithful openly endorsed Kalu as their preferred candidate, describing him as the most viable figure to lead the state under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The endorsement came during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Chief Uzoma Ihuka to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency.
Addressing the gathering, Kalu expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the ruling party remains united and focused despite challenges confronting opposition parties. He said the APC-led Federal Government is laying a solid foundation for sustainable development across the country, including Abia State.
The event also witnessed a wave of defections from opposition parties, particularly the Labour Party, with new entrants citing improved leadership direction and growing confidence in the APC as reasons for their switch.
Kalu assured the defectors of inclusive governance and people-oriented leadership, emphasizing that the party is committed to addressing grassroots needs and improving livelihoods.
Responding to mounting calls for his governorship ambition, the Deputy Speaker acknowledged the widespread support across various parts of the state, including Bende and Obingwa, but said he would make his position known at the appropriate time.
“I have received your request for me to run for governor of Abia State, but I will respond in the coming days. I don’t want to do it local government by local government,” he said.

Kalu stressed that any formal declaration would be made in Umuahia, the state capital, in line with constitutional expectations.
“When we talk about governorship, there is only one place recognised to exercise that mandate — Umuahia. It will not be in Isiala Ngwa, Obingwa, or Aba. Wait for our invitation. When I hear your collective voice there, I will respond,” he added.
