The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the confirmed patient and her husband to Switzerland, while health authorities continue monitoring 52 contacts to prevent further transmission.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a post on his official X account on Monday, announcing that the patient and her husband were medically evacuated to Switzerland earlier in the day.
Janabi explained that both individuals are Swiss citizens, adding that the patient was clinically stable at the time of evacuation after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness.
He congratulated the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the response, describing their efforts as evidence of what African countries could achieve through collaboration.
“On behalf of WHO and all partners, I warmly congratulate the Government of Nigeria, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and all those involved in the response,” he said.
The WHO official, however, stressed that continued vigilance remained critical despite the absence of active Ebola cases in Nigeria.
He said Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of the 52 contacts identified during the response, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the continued medical management of the patient and her husband.
The development marks a new phase in Nigeria’s Ebola response, with attention shifting towards sustained contact monitoring and surveillance to ensure that no additional infections emerge.
Despite the current zero-case status, continued surveillance and adherence to public health measures remain essential to preventing further spread of the disease.
