Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in collaboration with personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), have foiled an attempted mass abduction by ISWAP terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State.
Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Maiduguri, disclosed this in a statement issued on July 19, 2026.
The military, however, confirmed that some students were fatally struck by sporadic gunfire from the terrorists during the firefight, even as all 46 students in the facility were successfully rescued and evacuated.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. when the terrorists reportedly gained access to the school, currently being used as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, with the help of suspected collaborators.
Alert security personnel swiftly engaged the attackers with coordinated and superior firepower, while the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) reinforced the troops, forcing the terrorists to flee without abducting any student.
Although parts of the school infrastructure were damaged during the exchange, all rescued students were taken to Kinnasara Barracks, Monguno, where they received immediate medical attention and were confirmed to be stable.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that efforts were ongoing to safeguard lives and protect critical institutions across the North-East.

The military added that investigations were underway to identify and apprehend suspected collaborators, while troops and other security agencies were tracking the fleeing terrorists.
It reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups, dismantling their operations, and ensuring that schools and communities in the region remain safe.
