Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have intensified efforts to rescue the abducted Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi, following a deadly attack on his residence in the early hours of July 25, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Theatre Command, armed terrorists stormed the chairman’s home, overpowering his security detail and abducting him alongside members of his family. However, a swift response by troops, who moved to the scene upon hearing gunshots, led to a fierce exchange of fire with the attackers.
The statement, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, said the troops’ prompt intervention forced the terrorists to abandon five of the chairman’s family members, including two of his children, his wife, mother and another relative, all of whom were successfully rescued, while the attackers escaped into surrounding bushes with the chairman.
The incident recorded casualties, as members of the chairman’s security detail, including two police officers and a local vigilante, were killed while resisting the attackers. A civilian also lost his life, while the chairman’s elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, sustained injuries during the assault.
Following the attack, the Theatre Command launched a coordinated search and rescue operation involving troops, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and local vigilante groups. Security operatives are currently conducting targeted operations at suspected terrorist hideouts to secure the safe release of the abducted chairman.

The Command assured the Zamfara State Government and residents that all necessary operational measures are being deployed to achieve a successful outcome. It also urged members of the public to remain calm, go about their lawful activities and provide credible information that could aid the ongoing rescue mission.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Theatre Command stated that it remains resolute in protecting lives and property and will continue working with relevant security agencies until the abducted chairman is rescued and the perpetrators brought to justice.
