Awka, Nigeria — Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has underscored compassion as a powerful tool for fostering healing and unity in society, as the world marked the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
In a statement issued on Friday in Awka, Soludo aligned with this year’s theme, “United in Humanity,” stressing that empathy and collective care remain essential in addressing human suffering and strengthening social cohesion.
Observed annually on May 8, the global event honours Henry Dunant, founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, while recognising the dedication of volunteers and staff committed to humanitarian service worldwide.
“On this World Red Cross Day, we are reminded that compassion remains one of the greatest forces for healing and unity,” she said.
She noted that through disaster response, healthcare delivery, and critical humanitarian interventions, the Red Cross continues to embody values of dignity, service, and humanity.
The governor’s wife also commended the courage and selfless service of members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the global Red Cross network, describing their sacrifices as a source of hope for vulnerable populations during times of crisis.

According to her, the unwavering commitment of humanitarian workers has continued to alleviate suffering and restore dignity to affected communities.
Soludo urged residents to embrace the spirit of humanity by extending love, care, and support to vulnerable groups, adding that collective responsibility is key to building a more compassionate, resilient, and secure society.
