As part of activities to commemorate World Water Day, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, commissioned a newly constructed solar-powered water facility at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Saturday, Prof. Utsev emphasized that the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at providing essential infrastructure, creating jobs, boosting the economy, and enhancing food production.
“Today, we are celebrating the 2025 World Water Day. One of the key activities marking this day is the provision of water facilities across the country,” Prof. Utsev said.
He highlighted the critical role of the NYSC Orientation Camp, where thousands of young Nigerians undergo their mandatory national service, stressing the need for adequate water supply to support their health, hygiene, and overall well-being.
“The NYSC camp is a place where young Nigerians dedicate themselves to serving our country. It is our responsibility, as a ministry, to ensure they have access to clean water and sanitation facilities,” he added.
Prof. Utsev explained that this year’s World Water Day theme—Glacier Preservation—is significant even for Nigeria, a tropical country. While Nigeria does not have glaciers, he noted that their melting due to climate change has global consequences, including rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns that impact the country.
The minister urged Corps members and camp officials to take full ownership of the water facility and use it responsibly to ensure its longevity.
“Sustainable water management is a shared responsibility. We must all play our part in conserving and managing water resources for both present and future generations,” he said.
Prof. Utsev also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet campaign, which aims to improve sanitation nationwide. He encouraged Corps members to help spread awareness about proper sanitation practices throughout their service year.
Expressing gratitude, the minister acknowledged President Tinubu’s support and commended NYSC officials and other stakeholders for their contributions in making the project a reality.
NYSC DG Applauds Federal Government’s Initiative
In his remarks, Brigadier General O. Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, represented by Deputy Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Alhaji Jikamshi Abdullahi, lauded the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation for its commitment to improving access to clean water across Nigeria.
“This project is a testament to the ministry’s dedication to enhancing water and sanitation services, particularly in NYSC camps, which play a crucial role in shaping the future leaders of our nation,” he said.
He acknowledged that the camp had long faced water supply challenges, making the newly commissioned facility a significant milestone in improving the living conditions of Corps members and officials.
“Access to clean water is not just a basic necessity—it is a cornerstone for health, productivity, and sustainable development. This project exemplifies what can be achieved through collaboration between government agencies,” he added.
He urged Corps members and staff to take responsibility for maintaining the facility, ensuring its sustainability for future batches.
“This initiative is not just an investment in infrastructure; it is an investment in the future of Nigeria. We deeply appreciate the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation for this laudable effort,” he concluded.
