The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) to address food insecurity and enhance humanitarian response across the country.
This assurance was given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during a meeting with the WFP Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Katrien Ghoos, who presented her Letter of Commission in Abuja on Wednesday.
The meeting underscored the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and the WFP, with both parties reviewing ongoing cooperation in key areas including food security, humanitarian assistance, nutrition, resilience-building, and sustainable development.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended the WFP for its sustained support, particularly in delivering life-saving interventions to vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian crises. She noted that the organisation has played a critical role in complementing government efforts to strengthen food systems, improve livelihoods, and build resilience in affected communities.
The minister reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to addressing the root causes of food insecurity through coordinated humanitarian and development strategies. She stressed the importance of integrating emergency interventions with long-term solutions such as agricultural productivity, rural development, economic inclusion, and climate resilience.
“We remain committed to fostering strategic partnerships that align with our national development priorities while ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they need,” she said.
In her remarks, Ms. Ghoos reaffirmed WFP’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with Nigeria, commending the Federal Government’s commitment to joint efforts aimed at achieving food security and sustainable development.
She expressed the organisation’s willingness to work closely with relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to implement impactful programmes nationwide.

Both sides also explored ways to strengthen institutional collaboration, improve coordination in humanitarian responses, mobilise international support, and adopt innovative approaches to enhance nutrition and resilience among vulnerable groups.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen Nigeria–WFP cooperation in line with the Federal Government’s development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the goal of ending hunger and ensuring food security for all Nigerians.
