The Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a public advisory alerting Nigerian nationals in South Africa to planned large-scale law enforcement operations targeting undocumented foreigners and other offenders in Gauteng Province.
According to the notice released on Monday, the operations are expected to take place from May 11 to May 15, 2026, and will involve coordinated enforcement activities by multiple South African security agencies. These include the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police, the Department of Home Affairs, National Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Authorities, and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
The Consulate disclosed that the operations may feature roadblocks, stop-and-search checks, document verification exercises, and possible house-to-house inspections. Authorities are also expected to clamp down on non-compliant vehicle owners, with potential vehicle impoundments and arrests.
Areas identified for intensified enforcement include Alexandra, Johannesburg Central Business District, Mamelodi, and Astonville.
While noting that the full details of the operations are yet to be officially confirmed, the Mission urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and security conscious throughout the period.
The advisory specifically called on Nigerian nationals to carry valid identification and immigration documents at all times, regularise any outstanding compliance issues, and avoid unnecessary movement in high-risk areas. It also cautioned against obstructing law enforcement officers during official duties.

Additionally, Nigerians were encouraged to document and promptly report any incidents of harassment, unlawful detention, or emergencies to the Consulate via its official communication channel.
The Consul General, Ambassador Nionkanwa Olachi Okey-Uche, reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerian citizens and assured that developments would be closely monitored.
