The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Hungary on its recent political transition, describing the inauguration of Prime Minister Péter Magyar as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic evolution.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended warm felicitations to the new Hungarian leader following his swearing-in at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest on May 9, 2026.
Nigeria also congratulated the Tisza Party on its victory in the April 12 parliamentary elections, expressing confidence in the newly formed government’s capacity to serve the Hungarian people effectively. The government noted that the peaceful transition underscores the importance of democratic participation, constitutional governance, and stability in strengthening public trust and national institutions.
According to a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria and Hungary enjoy longstanding cordial relations built on mutual respect and constructive engagement. Both countries have sustained cooperation across key sectors, including education, agriculture, trade and investment, science and technology, energy, and capacity development.
The statement highlighted Nigeria’s appreciation for Hungary’s scholarship and educational exchange programmes, which have enhanced people-to-people connections and contributed to human capital development.
The Federal Government further welcomed Prime Minister Magyar’s commitment to advancing democratic governance, regional stability, and economic growth, particularly within Europe. It reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen diplomatic ties and expand mutually beneficial partnerships with Hungary.
