Abuja — Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening defence cooperation with France following the successful conclusion of the Fifth Nigeria–France High Defence Staff Talks held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, emphasized Nigeria’s resolve to strengthen bilateral military ties through sustained strategic engagement, describing the talks as a vital platform for enhancing collaboration between both nations.
Represented by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye, at the closing session, the CDS noted that the dialogue continues to play a critical role in advancing joint training, intelligence sharing, capacity building and other areas of military cooperation.
He commended the French delegation for participating in the talks and highlighted the longstanding strategic relationship between Nigeria and France, anchored on a shared commitment to regional and global peace and security.
General Oluyede expressed optimism that the outcomes of the engagement would further solidify professional relationships and foster enduring partnerships between the Armed Forces of both countries. He reiterated Nigeria’s determination to sustain and expand existing areas of defence cooperation.
Leader of the French delegation, Lieutenant General Eric Peltier, also reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening defence collaboration with Nigeria through continuous strategic dialogue aimed at addressing emerging security challenges.
Peltier described Nigeria as a key regional power with a pivotal role in maintaining stability across Africa, noting that the country’s deep understanding of the regional security environment is essential for building a more robust and mutually beneficial partnership.

He added that the talks provided an opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation while reinforcing existing defence relations through meaningful engagement between relevant institutions.
The Fifth Nigeria–France High Defence Staff Talks, held from June 29 to 30, underscored the growing strategic partnership between both nations, driven by evolving security and geopolitical realities, as well as a shared commitment to promoting peace, stability and collective security.
