The Federal Government has expressed profound sympathy and solidarity with the governments and people of China and Nepal following devastating floods and landslides along the China-Nepal border that claimed over 500 lives.
The disaster, which occurred on August 26, 2026, also left hundreds of people injured and caused extensive destruction in areas including Gyirong County in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government said the tragedy claimed the lives of Chinese and Nepali nationals as well as tourists from Australia, India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and the United States, among others.
Nigeria extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed sympathy to those injured and displaced by the disaster, as well as communities whose homes and livelihoods were severely affected.
The Federal Government also commended the prompt emergency response by the Chinese authorities under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, particularly efforts to rescue survivors and provide humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

It further praised Chinese first responders and rescue teams for their courage, dedication and tireless efforts to save lives and provide critical assistance to victims of the disaster.
Nigeria said it stands in solidarity with China during the period of grief, while extending its thoughts and condolences to all those affected by the devastating floods and landslides.
