The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned residents of Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State against providing personal information or making payments to fraudsters posing as its officials to register disaster victims for humanitarian assistance.
The agency issued the warning following reports that some individuals were conducting an unauthorised enumeration exercise involving people purportedly affected by disasters in the area.
NEMA, in a statement dated October 14, categorically disowned the exercise, stressing that the individuals involved were neither its staff members nor authorised representatives.
The agency explained that all legitimate enumeration, assessment and registration exercises follow established procedures and are conducted in collaboration with state governments through their respective State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs).
It warned that any exercise carried out outside the approved procedures was unauthorised and invalid.
Consequently, NEMA urged residents of the affected communities to disregard the purported registration exercise and avoid disclosing personal information or making payments to the individuals involved under the pretext of registration, enumeration or qualification for humanitarian support.
