President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called for concrete reforms in the administration of the National Assembly, warning that the success of the legislature depends on translating institutional resolutions into measurable improvements in service delivery.
Akpabio made the call on Friday while declaring open a three-day retreat for the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) and top management of the National Assembly at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
Represented by Senator Babangida Hussaini, the Senate President said the retreat must produce practical outcomes that would strengthen institutional governance, improve administrative efficiency and promote accountability across the National Assembly Service.
He said the effectiveness of the legislature depended not only on the quality of its legislative and oversight functions but also on the professionalism of its workforce and the efficiency of its administrative structures.
According to him, the retreat, themed “Strengthening Institutional Synergy, Administrative Effectiveness and Professional Service Delivery in the National Assembly,” provided an opportunity for participants to address institutional challenges, improve coordination and develop strategies for better performance.
Akpabio stressed that no department, directorate or agency could achieve its full potential in isolation, urging the National Assembly management and the NASC to strengthen cooperation and pursue common objectives.
“Administrative effectiveness requires us to embrace innovation, improve internal processes, promote accountability and ensure that institutional resources are deployed efficiently,” he said.
He added that professional service delivery required discipline, integrity, competence and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
The Senate President urged participants to engage constructively, exchange ideas and develop actionable recommendations capable of delivering sustainable improvements in legislative administration.
He further stressed that the administrative support provided to the legislature must reflect the importance of its constitutional responsibilities and the expectations of Nigerians.
Akpabio warned against allowing the retreat to end with discussions and resolutions without corresponding action, urging participants to ensure that their deliberations resulted in practical changes.
“Let this retreat be more than an avenue for discussion. Let it mark a turning point towards stronger institutional governance, more efficient administrative processes and a renewed culture of professionalism and accountability,” he said.
He maintained that the success of the retreat would be determined not by the number of resolutions adopted but by participants’ commitment to translating them into tangible results.

The three-day retreat brought together key stakeholders in legislative administration to examine institutional relationships, administrative processes and measures to enhance the overall effectiveness of the National Assembly Service.
