The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the nation are in mourning following the tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in captivity after being abducted by bandits.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the late senior officer as a dedicated patriot who served Nigeria with distinction.
The AFN extended its heartfelt condolences to the Abubakar family, his colleagues, and all Nigerians, noting that his death is a significant loss to both the military and the country.
Maj. Gen. Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and military spokesman, held several key appointments during his service. He was widely respected for his contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional development of the Armed Forces, and his unwavering commitment to national unity.
The military explained that it had earlier withheld public comment on his abduction to support ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies, with all available resources deployed in hopes of securing his safe return.
The DHQ stated that his death has further strengthened the resolve of the Armed Forces to intensify operations against criminal elements, including those responsible for his abduction.
It added that ongoing military operations have been escalated to bring perpetrators to justice and dismantle terrorist networks threatening the nation’s security.
