The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in collaboration with European Union-backed partners, has intensified efforts to tackle the growing challenge of construction and demolition waste in Lagos through the Green Waste Remediation and Recycling (GROW) Vocational Training Workshop.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the initiative represents a strategic response to the environmental and economic risks posed by poor construction waste management.
Represented by the Authority’s Executive Director, Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, Gbadegesin described the GROW project as a critical intervention aimed at bridging technical skill gaps while aligning Lagos’ waste management practices with global standards.
He explained that the project seeks to drive the green transformation of the construction sector by promoting sustainable waste practices, strengthening technical capacity, and fostering collaboration among government agencies, training institutions, and private sector players.
According to him, the initiative—co-funded by the European Union under the ERASMUS+ programme—focuses on Nigeria and Mozambique as emerging economies grappling with increasing volumes of construction waste.
Gbadegesin added that LAWMA is strengthening the management of Construction, Demolition and Disaster Waste (CDDW) to ensure efficient handling from generation to disposal, while also unlocking opportunities for recycling and resource recovery.
He emphasised that the programme would not only improve environmental outcomes but also support skills development, create employment opportunities, and accelerate the transition from a linear to a circular waste management system in Lagos.
In her remarks, Project Coordinator, Isabel Goncalves, described the workshop as timely, stressing that the GROW project is designed to deliver practical, skills-based solutions to the rising volume of construction waste.
She noted that the initiative would enhance workforce capacity, improve waste management outcomes across participating countries, and strengthen collaboration among key stakeholders.

Participants at the workshop included representatives from industry groups, waste management associations, academia, and private sector organisations.
The statement reaffirmed stakeholders’ commitment to deepening partnerships, strengthening policy implementation, and advancing sustainable construction waste management practices in Lagos and beyond.
