The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Monday celebrated its female street sweepers and staff members with free health screening and special recognition awards as part of activities marking the International Women’s Day 2026.
The event, held at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa, highlighted the critical role female sanitation workers play in maintaining environmental cleanliness across Lagos.
Speaking at the event, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the programme was organised to honour the dedication, resilience, and contributions of women working within the authority.
Gbadegesin noted that the celebration featured free medical screening and reward packages for female sanitation workers and staff, aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and improving their overall well-being.
He praised the commitment of female workers, particularly street sweepers, describing them as vital to LAWMA’s operations and to keeping Lagos communities clean and livable.
“The contributions of women, including our ever-diligent sweepers, remain vital to the operational success of LAWMA and the cleanliness of Lagos communities,” he said. “Today, we celebrate your resilience and commitment to the state. You are appreciated, and the government will continue to prioritise your welfare.”
The LAWMA boss also disclosed that the state government had approved a health insurance scheme for the sweepers, noting that their enrolment cards under the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme would be ready for collection in a few weeks.
According to him, about 16,000 street sweepers across the state will benefit from free access to medical services under the scheme.
Gbadegesin further urged the workers to prioritise their health through regular medical check-ups and encouraged them to invest in the education and empowerment of their children, especially the girl child.
He added that the success of the celebration was supported by partners, including Agatem Pharmaceuticals, which donated drugs for the medical outreach; Toleram Group, which provided food items for the sanitation workers; and Waste Care, which offered financial support to the sweepers.

As part of the event, five outstanding female street sweepers were honoured with gifts in recognition of their dedication and exemplary service.
Two of the beneficiaries, Mary Omoyosi and Taiwo Azeez, speaking on behalf of their colleagues, commended the Lagos State Government and LAWMA management for prioritising staff welfare, particularly the prompt payment of salaries and efforts to improve the wellbeing of sanitation workers.
