Abuja — Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly healthcare professionals, to deepen their support for the country’s health sector through knowledge transfer, mentorship, and investment.
Represented by the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Kashim Shettima, the First Lady made the call at the 2026 National Diaspora Merit Awards Dinner held in Abuja as part of activities marking the National Diaspora Day celebration organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
Speaking on the theme, “Enhancing Global Diaspora Expertise to Strengthen Healthcare Systems for National Development,” Senator Tinubu commended Nigerians abroad for their excellence and contributions across various sectors, noting that their achievements continue to elevate Nigeria’s global reputation while driving national development.
She particularly praised participants of the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative (DHII), highlighting how Nigerian medical professionals abroad have returned home to carry out medical missions, perform life-saving surgeries, offer specialist consultations, and train local healthcare workers.
According to her, such interventions demonstrate patriotism and underscore the importance of leveraging diaspora expertise to improve healthcare delivery and citizens’ well-being.
The First Lady noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prioritises a functional healthcare system as a key driver of development, adding that the administration is committed to creating an enabling environment for diaspora engagement.
She encouraged professionals abroad to sustain their involvement by mentoring young practitioners, transferring skills, and investing in healthcare infrastructure and innovation.
“Our greatest national resource is our people,” she stated, emphasizing that the commitment of Nigerians in the diaspora remains a source of hope for the nation’s future.
Senator Tinubu also commended the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for her efforts in strengthening diaspora participation through strategic initiatives.
