Representing Kogi West, Senator Sunday Karimi has expressed his admiration for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s significant role in the recent groundbreaking decision on financial autonomy for local government areas by the Supreme Court.
He emphasized the need to acknowledge Tinubu’s contribution by immortalizing him in the nation’s “Hall of Fame” for his unwavering support in enabling the judiciary to function independently, leading to this momentous ruling.
In a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, Karimi assured the public that the National Assembly is committed to ensuring the enforcement of this judgment across all state governments.
He highlighted the intention to amend the constitution to address contentious issues such as the transfer of electoral responsibilities from state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Karimi commended President Tinubu for rectifying the long-standing neglect of local governments since 1999, stressing that Tinubu’s actions have reinstated the rightful authority of local councils. He acknowledged Tinubu’s courage in addressing this issue promptly, emphasizing the positive impact it would have on improving the quality of life for citizens. Despite potential resistance from certain state governors, Karimi emphasized the necessity of upholding the Supreme Court’s ruling and ensuring equitable distribution of funds among the three tiers of government.
Looking ahead, Karimi highlighted the importance of conducting local government elections through INEC to guarantee transparency and credibility in the selection of local government officials.
He emphasized the need for experienced individuals to manage local government finances effectively, prioritizing grassroots development and active citizen engagement. Karimi concluded by recognizing Tinubu’s pivotal role in this achievement, expressing confidence in his re-election and the lasting legacy he would leave behind.
