The Federal Government has appointed Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili as the substantive Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), with authorities emphasising that accurate diagnosis remains central to effective healthcare delivery.
The Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, made the disclosure on Tuesday during the presentation of the appointment letter in Abuja, noting that the selection followed a rigorous, transparent and merit-based process in line with statutory guidelines.
Salako stressed that medical laboratory science plays a pivotal role in the health sector, describing it as the backbone of accurate diagnosis and quality treatment outcomes. He said the appointment was necessary to provide stable leadership for the Council to effectively discharge its regulatory responsibilities.
“We have gone through a diligent and strict process. Having emerged as the best candidate, it became necessary to regularise the acting position to ensure the Council continues to function optimally,” he said.
He further explained that the vacancy was advertised in national newspapers, while applications were assessed based on clearly defined criteria. Petitions received during the process, he added, were legally reviewed and found not to invalidate the exercise, with Ofili emerging top among five shortlisted candidates.
The minister charged the new Registrar to strengthen regulatory oversight, enhance professional standards and promote the advancement of medical laboratory science, noting that without accurate diagnosis, healthcare delivery would be ineffective.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Daju Kachollom, represented by Tetshoma Dafeta, urged the appointee to prioritise staff welfare and maintain strong collaboration with the ministry, particularly on administrative matters.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Ofili expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to uphold the Council’s mandate through dedicated service. He assured stakeholders of efforts to improve regulatory standards, staff welfare and collaboration within the profession.
The appointment takes immediate effect and will run for a tenure of four years in accordance with the MLSCN Act.
