The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chief Tony Ojukwu, has reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to promoting human rights, democratic values, and responsible media practice in Nigeria.
Ojukwu made this known in a goodwill message delivered at the maiden edition of the Emporium Leadership Lecture and Awards 2026, held at the Bukhari Bello Auditorium, NHRC headquarters in Abuja.
He emphasized the critical role of the media in strengthening democratic institutions, noting that a vibrant and responsible press remains essential for accountability, civic engagement, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
According to him, “a vibrant and responsible media plays a critical role in strengthening democratic institutions, amplifying the voices of citizens, promoting accountability, and fostering a culture of respect for human rights and the rule of law.”
The NHRC boss commended Emporium Magazine for its decade-long contribution to journalism, public enlightenment, and national development, describing its 10th anniversary as a testament to resilience, professionalism, and dedication to societal progress.
He further lauded the introduction of the Emporium Leadership Lecture, noting that it provides a platform for robust intellectual discourse on national issues, which is vital for shaping public policy and encouraging informed citizenship.
Ojukwu also praised the magazine’s initiative to honour individuals and institutions through Awards of Excellence, stating that such recognition promotes a culture of integrity, innovation, and service to humanity.
“The recognition of deserving personalities and institutions is both timely and appropriate, as it inspires others to contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.
Reiterating the Commission’s stance, he stressed that sustainable national progress can only be achieved through collaboration among citizens, institutions, the media, and government in upholding justice, equality, and human dignity.

He congratulated the publisher and Chief Executive Officer of Emporium Magazine, Mr. Lukman Laleye Babalola, and his team on the milestone, expressing optimism that the platform will continue to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Nigeria.
The event also marked the unveiling of Emporium Magazine’s 10th anniversary special edition, celebrating a decade of impactful journalism and leadership recognition.
