The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has successfully concluded the 2026 Chief of Defence Staff Democracy Day Volleyball Championship, underscoring the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) commitment to physical fitness, unity and operational readiness.
The championship, held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Indoor Sports Complex in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, featured male and female teams from across the Services in a vibrant display of sportsmanship, professionalism and healthy competition.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the CDS commended participants, organisers and officials for the seamless conduct of the event. He described the championship as timely and significant, stressing the importance of maintaining physical, mental and emotional fitness among military personnel to meet the demands of service and national expectations.
The CDS, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral Sabiru Lawal, praised the discipline, resilience and teamwork demonstrated during the competition, noting that volleyball promotes key attributes essential for military effectiveness.
He congratulated the winners and encouraged other participants to remain steadfast, emphasising that every contest provides opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Gideon Kachim, while declaring the event open, described the championship as a celebration of unity, professionalism and camaraderie within the AFN. He noted that sports play a crucial role in building resilience, sustaining operational fitness and identifying talents capable of representing both the military and the nation at higher levels.

In the final results, the Nigerian Navy emerged champions in both the male and female categories, outperforming other Service teams to clinch the coveted trophies and cash prizes. The Navy also secured the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards in both categories.
The championship further highlighted sports as a vital tool for deepening jointness and fostering esprit de corps within the Armed Forces. Observers noted that the high level of participation, competitive spirit and unity displayed throughout the event reflected the success of its objectives.
