The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Christopher Adegoke on his historic election as the first Black and minority individual to serve as Chairman of the Nottinghamshire County Council since its establishment in 1889.
A statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at NiDCOM, disclosed that Adegoke was officially elected into the prestigious position on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Dabiri-Erewa described the development as a landmark achievement for both the Nigerian diaspora and inclusive governance in the United Kingdom, noting that it underscores the growing global impact of Nigerians.
“This historic accomplishment is yet another testament to the outstanding contributions Nigerians in the diaspora are making across various sectors around the world. Councillor Christopher Adegoke has made Nigeria proud through his commitment to public service, community development, and exemplary leadership,” she said.
She added that Adegoke’s emergence reflects the resilience, integrity, and leadership capacity that Nigerians continue to demonstrate globally, while commending his dedication to grassroots governance and community engagement.
The NiDCOM boss also applauded the Nottinghamshire County Council for demonstrating inclusive and progressive values in electing Adegoke to the distinguished office.
Adegoke, in his remarks following the election, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, pledging to work closely with residents, organisations, charities, and businesses across Nottinghamshire during his tenure.

His civic inauguration as Chairman and First Citizen of Nottinghamshire County is scheduled for June 28, 2026.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed confidence that Adegoke’s tenure would be impactful, adding that his leadership would continue to inspire Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
