The Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution, Senator Barau I Jibrin, has advocated for strong collaboration among all stakeholders to successfully conclude the ongoing constitution amendment process.
Senator Barau made thee remarks on Saturday during the joint retreat of the secretariat and consultants to the Senate and House of Representatives committees on the review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, held in Abuja.
He commended the coordination between the constitution review secretariat and consultants to the Senate and House of Representatives committees, stating that this would promote unity in the operations of both committees.
Senator Barau reaffirmed that the National Assembly would conduct a comprehensive review of the constitution by consolidating the desires of Nigerians from all sectors of society through public hearings and the collection of memoranda from various interests across the country.
He added that the National Assembly will engage in progressive discussions with state governments, legislatures, and the federal government to reach a consensus on all matters.
“We must collaborate. Our nation is encountering numerous challenges, making it imperative to develop a constitution that aligns with the desires and aspirations of our people.
“The global landscape is constantly evolving, necessitating serious nations to adapt to modernity and tailor their laws to reflect current events within their unique contexts.
“We have initiated a constructive collaboration, and it is crucial to build upon this momentum within our ranks to achieve outcomes that will contribute to fostering a future characterized by peace, justice, and equitable governance in our nation,”he expressed.
