The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has officially launched the construction of the Greater Dutse Water Supply Project.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Sintilmawa, Jigawa State, marking a significant step toward addressing water supply challenges in the region.
This was disclosed in a press statement signed by Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan
Director, Information and Public Relations on Thursday.
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, described the project as a transformative milestone that will improve access to clean water and enhance the quality of life for over 1.5 million residents in Dutse and its environs.
Highlighting the project’s importance, the Minister noted it was conceived to address a daily water supply deficit of 10 million liters.
He revealed that ₦59.46 billion had been approved by the Federal Executive Council under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for the project, which is scheduled for completion within 24 months.
The Minister detailed the key components of the initiative, which includes:
Construction of 35 industrial boreholes with solar-powered pumps.
Installation of a 1,000m³/hr water treatment plant and related infrastructure.
Construction of reinforced concrete and Braithwaite storage tanks.
Laying of 56.6km of HDPE pipelines for water transmission.
Installation of solar systems, transformers, and generators for power supply.
Development of administrative and staff facilities at project sites.
Prof. Utsev emphasized the wide-ranging benefits of the project, including job creation, economic stimulation, and improved access to safe drinking water.
He also announced the establishment of a dedicated Project Implementation Unit, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Water Resources, Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and the Jigawa State Government, to ensure timely delivery and adherence to budgetary allocations.
Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State commended the Federal Government for its commitment to tackling the region’s persistent water scarcity.
He described the project as a major development for the state and a fulfillment of President Tinubu’s pledge to prioritize infrastructure and essential services.

Other dignitaries, including the Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Sada Soli; the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Hameem Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi; and the outgoing Managing Director of Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Ma’amun Da’u Aliyu, lauded the initiative and pledged their support.
The ceremony also featured a project overview by Mr. Mukaila Babarinde, Director of Water Supply Services at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
High-ranking officials, traditional rulers, and stakeholders from the water resources sector were present at the event, which concluded with the official groundbreaking and handover of the project to the contractor for immediate commencement.
