The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the unveiling of the Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership Road Map (NNPAP).
Dr. Salako conveyed this assurance during a meeting with the NNPAP delegation, headed by Mr. Clem Ugorji, in Abuja to discuss the forthcoming launch of the National Action Roadmap on NNPAP.
He urged the NNPAP team to ensure that the roadmap aligns with the Circular Economy policy regarding Plastic waste Management in the Country.
Dr. Salako emphasized that the prohibition of single-use plastic in government establishments is a strategic measure to combat the issue of plastic waste.
Mr. Clem Ugorji, the leader of the delegation, disclosed their purpose for visiting the Ministry – to seek support for the imminent launch of the NNPAP National Action Roadmap.
He also revealed that the collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) aims to gather comprehensive data on plastic waste in the country, enhancing control and engagement of pertinent stakeholders in plastic waste management.
Usman Abubakar Bukani, the Director of Pollution and Environmental Health Control at the Federal Ministry of Environment, highlighted that Nigeria joined the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) in January 2021, with the subsequent launch of the Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership (NNPAP) in May 2023.
Mr. Bukani further emphasized that the NNPAP serves as a locally-driven, multi-stakeholder collaborative platform to translate commitments addressing plastic pollution into tangible actions.
