The Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers (NSME) has honoured the Director-General of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (MCO), Engr. Simon Obadiah Nkom, with a Silver Jubilee Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his exemplary leadership and contributions to the growth of the mining industry in Nigeria.
The award, which was earlier announced at the NSME Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Annual Conference held in Lokoja, Kogi State, in late October 2026, was formally presented to Nkom at the MCO conference room in Abuja.
The press release, signed by Henry David, Head of Information, Public Relations and Communication (IPR), Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, on November 2, 2026, said the award recognised Nkom’s outstanding leadership and tremendous support for the NSME and the mining industry.
Presenting the award on behalf of the NSME Council, the society’s President, Dr Umar Hassan, said the recognition was in appreciation of Nkom’s exemplary leadership and exceptional contributions to the society, mining and mineral processing engineering in Nigeria.
Hassan expressed gratitude for the MCO boss’s consistent support for the professional body, noting that his contributions had been invaluable to the society.
In his response, Nkom expressed surprise and appreciation for the recognition, noting that the award was not just a personal achievement but also a recognition of the collective efforts of the MCO management and staff.
He emphasised the importance of teamwork in leadership, saying successful leadership depended on the cooperation and support of colleagues.
“Leadership is not by one person. Once you don’t have co-leadership, then you are not leading anyone. It is the support from my colleagues that makes life and leadership much easier and successful for me,” he said.
