ABUJA — The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has given the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), a 14-day ultimatum to demonstrate visible and tangible improvements in security in Sokoto State or resign from office.
MURIC, in a statement issued on Saturday by its Founder and Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said the ultimatum would take effect from Monday, August 24, 2026.
The group accused the Federal Government and the military of failing to halt persistent killings and kidnappings, particularly in Sokoto State, which it described as the seat of the Nigerian caliphate.
According to MURIC, at least 43 people and an Imam were killed in attacks in Sokoto over the past three weeks, while 19 others were abducted.
The organisation said the attacks had heightened fears among residents, with farmers allegedly unable to access their farmlands, villagers fleeing their communities and travellers facing increasing risks of abduction.
MURIC said it was holding the Nigerian Army responsible for what it described as security lapses in and around the state, insisting that a stronger security architecture was urgently needed.
Akintola recalled that Musa, upon assuming office as Defence Minister, had vowed to stop the killings of Nigerians and said the minister should be held accountable to that pledge.
The group also cited a recent warning by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged plans by terrorists to attack tertiary institutions in Sokoto State.
“We therefore give the Minister of Defence 14 days starting from Monday, 24th August 2026 to make visible, tangible and reliable changes in the security paraphernalia in and around Sokoto,” MURIC said.
It added that the alternative would be for the minister to submit his resignation on or before the expiration of the ultimatum.

“The Defence Minister cannot stand akimbo while the seat of the caliphate is burning and still keep his ministry,” the group said.
MURIC urged the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently strengthen security across Sokoto and protect residents from further attacks.
