The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its statewide Operation Deep Clean, scaling up enforcement and environmental sanitation efforts to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and eliminate black spots across Lagos State.
The agency said the renewed intervention combines large-scale clearance of illegal dumpsites, shoreline clean-up, and coordinated enforcement operations, targeting critical areas such as Fadeyi, Shiro, Morocco Road, Somolu, Marine Beach, Mobil Road, Ajegunle, Apapa, Alimosho, Akowonjo, and Itire, among others, to improve sanitation and prevent flooding.
Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs, LAWMA, said the Authority remains committed to sustaining the exercise until compliance with environmental regulations improves significantly, stressing that indiscriminate waste disposal by residents and businesses continues to undermine sanitation efforts.
Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that the agency would not relent in its enforcement drive, noting that the ongoing operation also includes joint enforcement along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, particularly around the Alaba Rago corridor, in collaboration with the environmental sanitation task force and the military.
He explained that the intervention was designed not only to clear existing waste but also to deter environmental infractions and prevent the re-emergence of black spots, while protecting critical public infrastructure.
Gbadegesin emphasised that effective waste management requires collective responsibility, urging residents and businesses to patronise assigned Private Sector Participants (PSPs), properly dispose of waste, and comply with environmental laws.
He added that LAWMA would continue to integrate clean-up operations, enforcement, stakeholder engagement, and public enlightenment to promote environmental sustainability and build a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
The LAWMA boss also highlighted the importance of community collaboration, calling on community leaders, market associations, and residents to take ownership of environmental sanitation and support monitoring efforts to prevent illegal dumping.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to sustaining Operation Deep Clean as part of the Lagos State Government’s broader vision of creating a resilient megacity with improved environmental standards.
