Abuja — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, in a move aimed at ensuring continuity in key reforms and a smooth leadership transition within the service.
The extension, which takes effect from August 1, 2026, will run until February 2027, according to a State House press statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Adeniyi’s initial tenure extension was due to expire in August 2026. The additional six months, described as final, is intended to allow him to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, a flagship initiative designed to enhance trade facilitation and improve revenue generation.
The presidency also noted that the extension would ensure an orderly succession process within the Customs Service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the NCS Board to carry out strategic personnel management, including the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs. He will also oversee the mandatory retirement of officers who have either reached the age of 60 or completed 35 years of service, in line with civil service regulations.

Adeniyi, a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and rose steadily through the ranks. He became Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, and Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020. In January 2023, he was appointed Acting Deputy Comptroller-General before President Tinubu named him Comptroller-General in June 2023.
The latest extension underscores the administration’s emphasis on sustaining institutional reforms and strengthening governance structures within key revenue-generating agencies.
