Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries, citing the need to prioritise peace, unity, and stability in the state over personal ambition.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the governor said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and political associates, describing the move as “difficult but necessary.”
Fubara emphasised that leadership requires sacrifice, noting that Rivers State’s collective interest must come before individual aspirations, particularly at a critical time in the state’s political landscape.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.
The governor, however, pledged his full support for whoever emerges as the APC candidate, urging party faithful to remain united and committed to the party’s goals.
Addressing his supporters, Fubara acknowledged the disappointment his withdrawal may cause, appreciating their loyalty and sacrifices throughout his political journey. He explained that his silence in recent times was “deliberate and strategic,” guided by the overarching interest of the state.
Without giving details, he hinted at mounting pressures and difficult choices, noting that some issues were best handled with restraint in the interest of peace.
“It is enough to say that I have faced immense pressures and difficult choices, but my love for Rivers State remains greater than anything else,” he said.
Fubara also expressed gratitude to the leadership of the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and encouragement, reaffirming his commitment to the party.
He clarified that his decision to step aside was not borne out of fear or weakness, but out of conviction and a desire to ensure stability in Rivers State.

The governor further assured residents that he remains dedicated to serving the people of the state until the end of his tenure.
