ABUJA — The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, has called for urgent improvements in journalists’ welfare, safety, and adherence to ethical standards, describing these as critical to sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2026 Press Week of the NUJ FCT Council, Yahya stressed that the annual event should go beyond ceremony and serve as a moment for reflection, professional growth, and renewed advocacy within the media industry.
“Press Week is not merely a ceremonial event. It is a period of introspection, recommitment, and renewed advocacy for ethical journalism, press freedom, national development, and the welfare of media professionals across Nigeria,” he stated.
The NUJ president highlighted the evolving challenges confronting the profession, including the rise of digital media, artificial intelligence, citizen journalism, and the spread of misinformation and disinformation. He also pointed to increasing security threats faced by journalists in the line of duty.
Despite these pressures, Yahya commended Nigerian journalists for their resilience and dedication to truth, describing them as “custodians of democracy” whose work is vital for accountability, transparency, and good governance.
He warned that democracy remains vulnerable without a free and independent press, while drawing attention to persistent issues such as attacks, harassment, poor remuneration, job insecurity, and unsafe working conditions affecting media practitioners.
“The Nigeria Union of Journalists remains resolute in advocating for better welfare, improved working conditions, insurance protection, prompt payment of salaries, and greater institutional support for journalists nationwide,” he said, noting that fear and hardship undermine professional performance.
Yahya disclosed that the union is actively engaging government institutions, media owners, and development partners to prioritise journalists’ welfare and protection across the country.
On professionalism, he urged journalists to embrace capacity building and adapt to emerging technologies while upholding ethical standards. He cautioned against sensationalism, political manipulation, and ethnic bias, emphasizing that credibility remains the profession’s greatest asset.
The NUJ president also appealed to government at all levels to respect press freedom and treat journalists as partners in nation-building. He called on security agencies to ensure the safety of reporters carrying out lawful duties.
“Democracy flourishes where the press operates freely without intimidation or fear,” he said.

He further urges journalists to promote unity, mentorship, and responsible reporting, noting that Nigeria’s current political and socio-economic realities make the role of the media more critical than ever.
Yahya added that the 2026 Press Week should foster stronger collaboration among the media, government, and civil society in pursuit of a just, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
