Abuja, May 11, 2026 — The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, over what it described as “professional impropriety” in the recent replacement of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State.
In a statement issued on Monday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, criticised the circumstances surrounding the redeployment of Osun REC, Barrister Mutiu Agboke, who was replaced by Mrs. Toyin Babalola, a retired INEC director.
The group expressed concern over allegations that Agboke’s removal followed a petition reportedly linked to political actors, describing the process as lacking transparency and due procedure. MURIC likened the situation to a referee taking a unilateral decision in a football match without consulting other officials, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the electoral body.
According to the statement, the absence of an official explanation from INEC and the appointment of a replacement allegedly involved in an ongoing court case further raised questions about the integrity of the process.
MURIC demanded an immediate reversal of Agboke’s redeployment, insisting it was politically motivated and did not follow due process. The organisation also reiterated its longstanding call for the removal of Amupitan, citing what it described as a pattern of controversial decisions and actions.

The group warned that entrusting the nation’s electoral system to a leadership it considers compromised could jeopardise the credibility of future elections in Nigeria.
INEC has yet to officially respond to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
