HYPREP Advances Ogoni Power Project with Delivery of 4 Transformers, 12 Trucks of Equipments for Community Remediation

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has achieved a significant milestone in the ongoing construction of the 132KVA Ogoni Power Project (OPP) with the delivery of four 60MVA transformers and twelve trucks loaded with power accessories for the Wiiyaakara and Bodo Transmission Sub-stations.
This development marks a major leap forward in HYPREP’s commitment to deliver stable electricity to Ogoniland and support the long-term sustainability of its environmental remediation and community development projects.
The Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, earlier in the year, led a Factory Assessment Test (FAT) team to China, while another team of HYPREP staff, alongside the Power Consultant, visited India for similar technical evaluations — both aimed at ensuring the quality and readiness of the power equipment.
Providing updates on the civil works, the Technical Assistant on Power to the Project Coordinator, Engr. Dr. Joseph Aadum, disclosed that staff quarters and transformer foundations at the Wiiyaakara and Bodo substations are complete, while gantry foundation work is about 40 percent done. He noted that a total of 27 gantries will be constructed for the 132KV transmission-incomer and 18 for the 33KV-outgoing lines.
The Right of Way (ROW) for the transmission line spans 24 communities across Eleme, Tai, Gokana, and Khana Local Government Areas (LGAs). Payment for the wayleave is ongoing, with Khana completed, Gokana in progress, and Tai and Eleme scheduled to follow.
According to HYPREP, Phase One of the project involves tower construction along the ROW, while Phase Two will cover the distribution of electricity to Ogoni communities.
Described as a “game changer”, the Ogoni Power Project is expected to connect Ogoniland to the national grid, guaranteeing reliable and stable power supply to support key HYPREP initiatives such as the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER), the Ogoni Specialist Hospital, the Buan Cottage Hospital, and ongoing water projects.

Beyond energy access, the project is poised to boost local businesses, spur industrial growth, and transform Ogoni into an emerging hub for investment.
The OPP stands as one of HYPREP’s flagship interventions under the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report on Ogoniland, strategically linked to other thematic areas of the cleanup initiative, including potable water provision, public health, capacity building, peacebuilding, and livelihood restoration.
