A civil society organization, the Centre for Social and Economic Rights (CSER), has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for restoring democratic governance in Rivers State following six months of emergency rule.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Nelson Ekujumi, CSER described Tinubu’s decision to terminate the suspension of democratic structures as a bold step that reinforces his commitment to the constitution and the preservation of democracy.
The group recalled that Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on March 18, 2025, was necessary to avert a total breakdown of law and order amid the state’s political crisis. According to CSER, the President’s action prevented the situation from escalating into a national security and economic crisis.
“President Tinubu must be highly commended for being a responsive and responsible leader in preventing the degeneration of the political crisis in Rivers State into a national economic crisis. His timely intervention laid the template for peace, law and order to return, making today’s restoration of democracy possible,” the statement read.
The organization also commended former Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (Rtd.), for what it described as “sterling administrative capacity” in managing the affairs of the state during the emergency period. CSER said Ibas successfully rallied the people and restored stability, praising him for his service to the nation even in retirement.
As Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state legislature resume office, CSER urged the governor to uphold constitutional provisions and avoid actions that could undermine democratic governance.
“We admonish Governor Fubara not to allow himself to be encouraged into waging war against democracy again. He must respect the independence of the three arms of government and learn from the lessons of the past six months,” CSER cautioned.

The group further applauded the people of Rivers State for their patience, resilience, and support for the sole administrator during the emergency rule despite provocations by anti-democratic actors.
CSER called on political stakeholders in Rivers to put aside past conflicts and prioritize peace, progress, and prosperity in the interest of the state and Nigeria’s democratic journey.
