President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new subsidy to drastically reduce the cost of kidney dialysis sessions for patients across Nigeria.
Under the intervention, the price per dialysis session has dropped from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000, according to a statement issued on Monday, August 18, by presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare.
The initiative, which targets thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related illnesses, will begin in 10 selected federal hospitals across the six geopolitical zones before scaling up nationwide. Early beneficiaries have expressed relief and gratitude over the life-saving intervention.
The hospitals included in the pilot phase are:
1. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute Meta, Lagos
2. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja
3. University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo
4. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, Imo
5. University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno
6. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun
7. Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
8. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare, Bauchi State
9. University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo

This health subsidy follows the administration’s earlier commitment to ease electricity costs for universities and hospitals, signaling what officials describe as a broader push to relieve critical sectors and vulnerable citizens.
