Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the late Mrs Rebecca Aikhomu, widow of former Chief of General Staff, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, as an embodiment of patience, humility, selfless service and generosity, saying her life remains a powerful lesson for younger generations.
Sanwo-Olu gave the tribute on Friday at a commendation and holy communion service held in her honour at the Cathedral Church of the Pentecost, Festac Town, Lagos. He was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mr Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.
Mrs Aikhomu, who was born on August 4, 1940, passed away on December 11, 2025, at the age of 85. She served in the Nigerian Army and retired as a Captain.
According to the governor, her life demonstrated that true greatness was not measured by power or position, but by character, consistency, faith and the positive impact made on others.
“On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, I commend Mama for a life well lived, a Christian family safely upheld and a legacy that continues to inspire,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“We celebrate not only the length of her years, but the depth of her impact and the clarity of her witness.”
He added that her legacy would continue to inspire generations, especially women, noting that her values reflected a truly godly Christian life.
In his sermon, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos SouthWest, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Ebenezer Adewole, described the late Mrs Aikhomu as a woman devoted to God and humanity, whose life was defined by service and charity.
Adewole recounted how she prioritised charitable outreach even when he planned a pastoral visit, noting that she was away attending to orphans and the less privileged.
“She lived out the gospel in practical terms. Her life was a blessing, and people will continue to speak good of her because of how she lived,” the bishop said.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, represented by the Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard Ltd., Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu, described her as a pillar within the Nigerian Navy community and a former President of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA).
“There has always been a strong bond between the Nigerian Navy and the Aikhomu family. We will miss her wise counsel, deep knowledge of naval history and warm guidance,” Abbas said.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mrs Aikhomu’s eldest daughter, Susan, described her mother as a woman of inestimable value, whose discipline, love and mentorship shaped her children and extended family.
“She taught us about God and service to humanity. She was not just a mother but a mentor and friend. She will be greatly missed,” she said.
