The Lagos State Government has pledged to reward National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who demonstrate exceptional commitment, discipline and measurable contributions to community development during their service year.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the pledge on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream I Orientation Course at the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, urged corps members to embrace excellence and make meaningful contributions to their host communities.
He said the state government believed that diligence, discipline and outstanding performance deserved recognition and encouragement.
Sanwo-Olu also urged the corps members to turn the entrepreneurial skills acquired through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme into viable businesses to promote self-reliance and job creation.
According to him, the skills acquired during the orientation course could enable them to establish businesses, explore funding opportunities and eventually create employment for others.
He encouraged them to contribute to development in education, healthcare, agriculture, environmental sanitation and social services, stressing that their impact should be measured by the lives they touched and the positive changes they introduced in their places of primary assignment.
The governor commended the NYSC state coordinator, camp officials, security personnel and other stakeholders for their roles in ensuring the successful completion of the three-week orientation exercise.
Earlier, the NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs Christiana Salmwang, charged corps members to demonstrate patriotism, uphold national unity and prioritise personal safety throughout their service year.
Salmwang said the value of their service would be determined by their character, commitment to community development and willingness to address challenges in their host communities.
She urged them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities and rise above ethnic, religious and cultural differences to promote unity, mutual respect and cooperation.
The coordinator also encouraged the corps members to participate in the post-camp SAED programme to strengthen their entrepreneurial abilities and improve their prospects for financial independence.
She cautioned them against unauthorised journeys and night travel, emphasising that personal safety should remain a priority throughout their service year.
Salmwang also appreciated Sanwo-Olu for supporting the renovation of the temporary orientation camp at Iyana-Ipaja and the construction of a permanent NYSC camp at Agbowa, Ikorodu.
