The Clerk to the National Assembly has said that the House of Representatives Open Week remains a key platform for promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in Nigeria’s legislative process.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 House of Representatives Open Week in Abuja, the Clerk described the initiative as one of the most significant expressions of parliamentary openness and democratic engagement in the country.
He noted that the Open Week underscores the commitment of the House to ensuring that the voices of citizens are not only heard but also reflected in national decision-making, emphasizing that the legislature must go beyond lawmaking to active public engagement.
According to him, the House of Representatives holds a unique position in Nigeria’s democracy due to its broad representation across all federal constituencies, making it the closest arm of government to the people.
Highlighting the achievements of the 10th House, the Clerk said lawmakers have expanded committee activities, addressed numerous public petitions, and introduced several bills aimed at improving governance, strengthening institutions, enhancing national security, and promoting economic growth.
He added that the Open Week provides an opportunity for the House to reflect on its progress, assess challenges, and deepen its commitment to democratic ideals, while also creating a platform for direct interaction between lawmakers and citizens.
The Clerk stressed that such engagements help build public trust, improve legislative effectiveness, and foster better understanding of parliamentary processes among Nigerians.
He commended the leadership of the House, under the Speaker, for institutionalising the initiative and promoting a responsive and people-centred legislature, while also acknowledging the support of development partners in advancing democratic governance.
