More than 140,000 people have been affected by severe flooding in northern Morocco following days of torrential rains and emergency dam releases. The disaster has resulted in loss of lives, mass displacement, and widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and farmlands, prompting urgent humanitarian response across the impacted regions.
In response, the Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sympathy and solidarity with the Kingdom of Morocco. In a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said:
> “The Federal Government of Nigeria extends profound sympathy and solidarity to the Government and the Kingdom of Morocco following the ongoing devastating floods that have affected the northern parts of the country, which have unfortunately resulted in the tragic loss of lives, the displacement of families, and extensive damage to homes, public utilities, transportation networks, farmlands, and other critical infrastructure.
Nigeria is deeply saddened by the magnitude of the human suffering and material losses occasioned by this natural disaster and stands firmly in unity with Morocco during this exceptionally difficult period. The Government of Nigeria recognizes the emotional toll on affected families and communities, as well as the broader national burden associated with emergency response, rehabilitation, and long-term reconstruction.
In this regard, Nigeria commends the swift, coordinated, and resolute actions of the Moroccan authorities, emergency services, and humanitarian actors in search-and-rescue operations, the provision of emergency shelter, medical assistance, and relief supplies, and the protection of vulnerable populations. These efforts underscore Morocco’s strong institutional capacity, preparedness, and commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.
We are confident that through sustained national efforts and international cooperation, the affected regions will recover and rebuild, with strengthened systems to mitigate future climate-related risks and disasters.
