The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army to remain disciplined, professional, and committed, stressing that their role in tackling security challenges on the Plateau is critical to Nigeria’s national stability.
The COAS gave the charge on Monday during an operational visit to the 3 Division headquarters in Jos, where he addressed officers and soldiers amid ongoing security operations in Plateau State.
Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasised that discipline remains the bedrock of the military profession, noting that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and anchored on the noble responsibility of defending the nation’s territorial integrity.
He disclosed that he had received detailed briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on operational realities and welfare challenges facing the troops, adding that the most pressing concerns had already been addressed.
According to a statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the COAS assured personnel that Army Headquarters is providing the necessary combat enablers to ensure troops are adequately equipped to perform their duties effectively.
“The welfare of our troops remains a top priority. We will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to do your job properly,” Lieutenant General Shaibu was quoted as saying.
He urged young soldiers to respect the chain of command and learn from their superiors, stressing that officers have a responsibility to mentor subordinates towards professional excellence and successful military careers.
The Army Chief also underscored the importance of physical fitness and mental alertness, noting that deliberate measures have been put in place to prepare personnel for the rigours of military service.
Highlighting leadership at all levels, he described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as the critical link between officers and soldiers, charging them to provide effective middle-level leadership and guidance.
On the ongoing operations in Plateau State, the COAS described the security situation as unique, assuring troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) is being properly guided and supported to achieve its mandate.
He further encouraged personnel to channel complaints and grievances through appropriate military channels, assuring them of prompt attention.

Reaffirming national appreciation for the sacrifices of soldiers, Lieutenant General Shaibu urged troops to remain proud of their service and to discharge their duties with honour, professionalism, and in line with global best practices.
As part of efforts to enhance troop welfare, the COAS also commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers and a separate residential accommodation block for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos.
