Nigeria and China have reinforced bilateral police cooperation aimed at combating cybercrime, enhancing intelligence sharing, and strengthening transnational security operations.
This renewed commitment followed a high-level courtesy visit by a Chinese delegation from the Shandong Provincial Public Security Department to the Zone 2 Police Command headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, on Thursday.
The delegation, led by Deputy Director-General Zhang Yuebo, reaffirmed China’s dedication to deepening law enforcement collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force through sustained training programmes, intelligence exchange, and joint security initiatives.
Yuebo recalled that both agencies formalised their relationship in 2019 through an exchange and cooperation agreement, which has since facilitated multiple capacity-building programmes for Nigerian police officers. He explained that the current visit was aimed at consolidating that partnership and expanding efforts to combat cybercrime and other transnational threats.
“We are committed to deepening cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force through training, intelligence sharing and joint security initiatives,” Yuebo said, while also stressing the importance of safeguarding Chinese nationals and businesses operating in Nigeria.
Responding, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Olohundare Jimoh, described the visit as a milestone in the growing police-to-police relationship between both countries.
Jimoh noted that the collaboration dates back to 2019 when retired Deputy Inspector-General, Lawal Shehu, participated in a training programme at the Shandong Police College, laying the foundation for sustained institutional engagement.
He disclosed that in 2025, 17 senior officers from the command underwent a two-week public security training programme in Jinan City, China, under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Olubode Fakeye. According to him, the training significantly enhanced the operational capacity and service delivery of participating officers.
The AIG commended China’s advancements in technological policing and crime prevention, describing the country as a strategic partner in global security cooperation. He added that the partnership aligns with modern policing strategies focused on intelligence-led operations, professionalism, and international collaboration.
Jimoh further highlighted that the Zone 2 Command, which oversees Lagos and Ogun States, remains critical due to the economic significance of both states, making enhanced security cooperation imperative.
He expressed optimism that the strengthened partnership would yield tangible benefits in cybercrime prevention, counter-terrorism, forensic investigations, and technological policing.

The police chief also reaffirmed that under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to intelligence-driven and community-based policing.
He urged members of the Chinese delegation to engage actively with officers of the command to deepen institutional ties and foster stronger diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China.
