NASS Joint Committee Commends NEDC’s Infrastructure Strides, Backs ₦244.06bn 2026 Budget Proposal

100% utilisation of released funds boosts confidence, legislators seek deeper socio-economic impact in 2026

The National Assembly Joint Committee has commended the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) for its infrastructural interventions across the North-East, expressing strong support for the Commission’s proposed ₦244.06 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

The commendation came during the defence of the Commission’s 2026 budget proposal before the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Thursday, chaired by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Kaka Shehu Lawan, and co-chaired by the Chairman of the House Committee on NEDC, Usman Zanna.

Presenting the budget, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mohammed G. Alkali, said the ₦244,066,466,734.00 proposal prioritises critical infrastructure, humanitarian interventions, socio-economic recovery, and institutional strengthening across the insurgency-affected region.

Alkali also reviewed the Commission’s 2025 performance, stating that overall implementation reached 100 per cent of the total allocation received, amounting to ₦131.84 billion, representing 59 per cent of the total ₦290.99 billion budgeted for the year.

The lawmakers lauded the Commission’s impact, particularly in road construction, housing, and other recovery projects, describing its performance as encouraging in the face of funding constraints.

While backing the 2026 proposal, the Senate urged the Commission to expand bursary and scholarship programmes to accelerate human capital development and deepen long-term socio-economic recovery in the North-East.
