Abuja, April 6, 2026 — The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, alleging that his continued stay in office poses a threat to religious harmony and electoral integrity.
In a statement issued on Monday, the group’s Founder and Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, accused Amupitan of authoring what it described as a “toxic” 80-page legal brief allegedly used by the United States of America to indict Nigeria over claims of Christian persecution.
MURIC expressed dissatisfaction with what it termed the Federal Government’s silence on repeated calls for the INEC chairman’s removal, describing the inaction as insensitive to the concerns of the Muslim community.
The group further alleged that Amupitan’s leadership could undermine confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process, warning that planned voter registration activities might disenfranchise Muslim voters.
“MURIC hereby declares a vote of no confidence in the current INEC boss,” the statement read, urging the Federal Government to replace him with “a tolerant Christian” to restore balance and trust.
The group also criticised the INEC chairman for failing to publicly respond to the allegations, contrasting the situation with high-profile resignations in other countries over ethical controversies.

MURIC warned that it would sustain its campaign until decisive action is taken, insisting that Nigeria’s democratic and social stability could be at risk if the matter is not addressed.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor the INEC chairman had issued an official response to the allegations.
