Migration Studies: Tool for Stronger Diaspora Engagement, Governance Reform – CEO NiDCOM Emphasize
The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has underscored the strategic importance of Migration Studies in strengthening diaspora engagement and enhancing migration governance in Nigeria.
Dabiri-Erewa made the assertion while receiving the Director, Coordinator, and Master’s students of the Centre for Migration Studies, University of Abuja, during a field trip to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a press statement e-signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at NiDCOM, the engagement focused on bridging academic knowledge with practical governance in migration management.
Leader of the delegation and Director of the Centre, Dr. Ifunanya Daniels, conveyed greetings from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja and expressed appreciation to NiDCOM for hosting the students.
She explained that the visit was designed to provide Master’s students with practical exposure and hands-on experience in migration governance, complementing classroom learning.
Daniels noted that the Centre for Migration Studies, established four years ago, was created to deepen research, policy engagement, and academic discourse on migration issues in Nigeria and beyond.
She encouraged NiDCOM staff to enroll in the programme, describing it as a strong capacity-building platform capable of enhancing professional competence within the Commission.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the Centre, Dr. Peter Adeyanju, emphasised the importance of field trips in broadening students’ understanding of migration policy and administration. He disclosed that ten admission slots have been reserved for interested NiDCOM staff and commended those already enrolled, describing them as worthy ambassadors of the Commission.
In her remarks, Dabiri-Erewa described the Migration Studies programme as a valuable opportunity to build capacity and tap into academic research that can strengthen institutional effectiveness.

She reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to supporting the Centre and stressed the need for sustained collaboration between academia and government institutions in addressing migration-related challenges.
The NiDCOM boss also invited staff of the Commission currently enrolled in the programme to share their experiences, highlighting continuous learning as a critical driver of improved service delivery and effective diaspora engagement.
The visit, she noted, further reinforced the partnership between NiDCOM and the University of Abuja, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing structured and evidence-based migration governance in Nigeria.
