LAWMA Secures Convictions for 19 Environmental Offenders, Court Imposes Fines and Jail Terms
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the conviction of 19 environmental offenders for open urination, open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, reinforcing efforts to enforce sanitation laws across the state.
Seventeen persons arrested for open urination and defecation were convicted by the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, after prosecution by LAWMA.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this on Thursday, stating that the court sentenced the 17 offenders to pay a fine of N40,000 each or serve one month imprisonment.
Gbadegesin further revealed that two other offenders, Obinna Nzugbe and Ifeanyi Ibe, were convicted for indiscriminate dumping of refuse. The court sentenced both men to five months imprisonment each after they pleaded guilty to the charges.
Meanwhile, Daniel Alfred, who was arraigned alongside them for similar offences, pleaded not guilty. His case was subsequently adjourned to April 3, 2026, for trial.
The LAWMA boss said the convictions underscored the Authority’s commitment to sustained enforcement of environmental laws across Lagos State.

He noted that open defecation, public urination and indiscriminate waste disposal pose serious public health, environmental and sanitation risks.
Gbadegesin urged residents to comply strictly with sanitation regulations and utilise approved waste disposal channels, warning that violators would continue to face prosecution in accordance with the law.
