The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) on Tuesday honoured its retiring teaching and non-teaching staff, describing them as pillars of excellence who dedicated their lives to building future generations.
The ceremony, held under the Year 2025 celebration of the ‘Last Day in Office’ and Post Service Champions Programme, highlighted the contributions of the retirees to the growth of basic education in the state.
Speaking at the event, LASUBEB Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, represented by Mr. Falana Jamiu, Permanent Board Member (Teachers’ Pension), said the initiative was designed to celebrate educators who served with distinction and advanced Lagos State’s vision of quality and inclusive education.
He described the event as “a gathering of reflection, gratitude and pride,” dedicated to honouring exemplary public servants whose loyalty and dedication strengthened the state’s education system.
“This ceremony is more than a farewell—it is a statement of value, appreciation and the government’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of its workforce,” Shittu said.
“Our retirees gave the best of their years and intellect to nurturing young minds. Through their efforts, Lagos has built not just classrooms but characters, not just schools but societies.”
He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for promoting policies that recognise exceptional performance in the public service, adding that the Post Service Champions initiative was a testament to his commitment to staff welfare.
According to him, the initiative supports the THEMES+ Agenda of the Sanwo-Olu administration, especially its pillar on Education and Technology, which emphasises human capital development.
He assured active staff of continued recognition, improved welfare, prompt salaries, a supportive work environment and merit-based awards.
Also speaking, Director of the Post Service Champion Department, Mrs. Bukola Durodola, urged the retirees to embrace post-service life with a positive mindset. She advised them to prepare physically, financially and emotionally for retirement.
“Retirement is not the end of purpose. Staying idle can lead to depression. Finding meaningful engagement keeps you productive and fulfilled,” she said.

Durodola reminded them of common health challenges associated with aging such as hypertension, diabetes and arthritis, urging early management. She added that the Lagos State Government organises bi-monthly health and wellness webinars to support retirees.
The event featured the presentation of certificates and commendations to the honourees in recognition of their outstanding service to the state.
