The Federal Government has signed a groundbreaking agreement with Siemens Healthineers to procure advanced oncology equipment aimed at enhancing cancer treatment facilities across six centers in Nigeria.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare infrastructure, focused on improving cancer care and treatment accessibility nationwide.
The agreement, announced by Tashikalmah Hallah, Special Adviser on Media and External Relations, CMH&SW on Mondays.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate. The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) represented the Federal Government in this strategic partnership.
Professor Pate highlighted the significance of the agreement, noting that it extends beyond a simple purchase transaction.
“This is a strategic alignment of public and private sector resources aimed at addressing some of the most pressing health challenges our nation faces,” he stated.
The first set of facilities is projected to become operational by May 2025. This ambitious project represents the first large-scale investment in advanced cancer treatment infrastructure in Nigeria.
According to Professor Pate, “For the first time, our healthcare system will be empowered to deliver timely, high-quality cancer care, supported by skilled personnel ready to commence treatment as soon as the facilities are in place. This initiative reflects President Tinubu’s vision under the NHSRII to create a healthcare system that meets the highest standards and addresses the real needs of the Nigerian people.”
He commended Dr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, Managing Director of NSIA, for his dedication to maximizing public healthcare investments, which has been pivotal in advancing the project.
The minister also acknowledged the contribution of Siemens Healthineers, represented by Ashok Kakkar, Vice President and Zone Head for the Middle East and Africa, for their commitment to the progress of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
As Professor Pate noted, “This collaboration represents a proactive step by the government to expand access to advanced cancer care and improve healthcare outcomes for our people.” The initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to building a resilient healthcare system, driven by strategic partnerships and stakeholder support.
“With President Tinubu’s vision, steadfast partner dedication, and collective stakeholder effort, this project signals a transformative era in Nigerian healthcare, promising improved care and hope for all citizens.”
Dr. Umar-Sadiq described the agreement as a landmark achievement, emphasizing that it covers not only the purchase of oncology equipment for the six centers but also a comprehensive training program for health personnel. Siemens Healthineers has provided a 30% discount on all equipment purchased under this deal, with fixed pricing on additional equipment acquisitions until 2025.
“This significant price reduction and commitment to training underscore Siemens’ long-term dedication to supporting healthcare development in Nigeria,” Dr. Umar-Sadiq said.
