The Federal Government has commended the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, for achieving a major milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare innovation space with the successful patent registration of GASTROPEX-BH, an indigenous medical solution developed by its researchers.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, described the development as a significant boost to Nigeria’s health research ecosystem, underscoring the growing capacity of local institutions to produce practical, homegrown solutions to pressing healthcare challenges.
In a statement signed by Ado Bako, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, the minister praised the hospital’s management, staff, and research team for their commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and improving healthcare delivery through innovation.
Prof. Pate gave special recognition to the lead innovators, Aminu Muhammed Umar and Kefas John Bwala, both of the Department of Surgery, whose dedication and expertise led to the development and successful patenting of GASTROPEX-BH.
He noted that the achievement highlights the critical role of sustained investment in research, local innovation, and human capacity development in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system and advancing national health priorities.

The Ministry expressed optimism that the success recorded by ATBUTH would inspire more Nigerian researchers and institutions to pursue impactful innovations capable of improving healthcare outcomes across Nigeria and the wider African continent.
